That hospital bill is not the final word.
Before you pay a big hospital or ER bill, ask for the itemized bill and the hospital's financial assistance policy. Both can change what you owe.
1. Get the itemized bill
Ask for every charge with its billing code, units and date, not the summary. Check it against your insurance's explanation of benefits. Look for charges billed twice, things you never got, and supplies billed separately that should be included.
2. Apply for financial assistance
Nonprofit hospitals must have a financial assistance policy and must accept applications for at least 240 days after the first bill sent after you left the hospital. source Ask them to pause collections while your application is reviewed.
3. Put disputes in writing
List each charge you dispute and why, ask for a corrected bill, and ask them to hold the account from collections while it's reviewed. Get any settlement in writing before you pay.
For medical bills we audit the bill and write the letters for you to send. One flat price, quoted before we start.
